Web 2.0 Tools and Apps in the Classroom

TeacherTube- TeacherTube is a free website designed for teachers to share credible and professional educational resources such as:
video, audio, documents, images, and blogs.
In essence, the site is a YouTube with materials related to education, teaching and learning.

SchoolTube- SchoolTube is a free, moderated system, that allows teachers and school administrators to open an account and submit school videos. This is moderated to ensure that only appropriate content is uploaded. Once a teacher's account is confirmed, a teacher can approve his or her own videos and publish them instantly. Teachers can organize videos into a playlist, which can also be added to a channel. There are options for privacy settings. Users can be added and channels can be created so students can upload or create their own videos. Check out CommonSense Media for more information.
Simple English Wikipedia- This can support students who struggle reading higher level text. It can also serve as an introductory search.
From the Simple Wikipedia Website "people use the Simple English Wikipedia because the basic language helps them understand hard ideas or topics they do not know about. Many articles are shorter than the same articles in the English Wikipedia...If someone cannot understand an idea in complex English, they can read the Simple English article. All of the articles in the Simple English Wikipedia need to use shorter sentences and easier words and grammar than the regular English Wikipedia."
This is a good option for struggling readers in intermediate grades.

Kiddle-This is a search engine powered by Google that is designed to provide safe search results for students.
This comes right from the Kiddle website: "The user enters topics in the search toolbar, and Kiddle returns and ranks its findings, with its first three results being suitable for children to read as well as of an easy reading level. "

Epic! Books- This is a fantastic website that is free for teachers (not for parents though). It is a digital library with a host of books in many formats. Some books are also offered in audiobook and read aloud formats. Many current, popular titles in both fiction and non-fiction, are on the website. Teachers can organize students into a virtual classroom. This is an excellent option for 'daily 5" literacy activities,

Vooks: Vooks Books is a streaming service that brings children’s books to life with animated illustrations, read-along text and narrated stories. The digital library has stories aimed at children ages 2-8.

QuiverVision- This is a free 3D augmented reality colouring app, where students are able to make their colouring pages come to life. This is an app that is more of a supplement for lessons. Common Sense Education recommends using it for writing prompts. For younger students who require additional practice with colouring to develop fine motor control this can be an engaging option. This may also be perfect for TTOCs or last minute activities.

- Minecraft- I will be co-planning a unit with a Grade 5/6 colleague. The project design is to create a Coast Salish Long House using Minecraft. This was completed by teachers in BC and shared at a SD#79 ProD learning day. Stay tuned for more information!
- Book Creator is a versatile app that allows students and teachers to easily and creatively make digital books. There are a number of features that provide opportunities to design custom pages and text. This is a great tool for teachers to use to introduce new concepts to students. It's easy to navigate and engaging for learners to use as another platform to share learning. We have Book Creator on all of our school ipads.

Sketchnotes Is a powerful way for students and teachers to express and record learning in a visual way. It is good for differentiation and is an excellent option for those who need a different way to take notes or record learning. There are many examples, and Sketchnote guru Sylvia Duckworth has a host of tips and examples on her website.
